New topology changes in Microsoft Lync Server 2010
Site
Active Directory site,
Exchange site… and now Lync Site. Isn’t it interesting?
J
Yeah… Microsoft has
come up with the concept of site in Microsoft Lync topology.
It wasn’t present in earlier versions (LCS or OCS).
Although the use of
sites in Lync Server and Active Directory Domain Services are similar, the Lync
Server sites can be different from your Active Directory Domain Services and Microsoft
Exchange Server sites. Lync Server does not use the sites you have defined for Active
Directory Domain Services.
You need to use Lync
Server Topology Builder to define a site.
A site contains Lync Server 2010 components. A
site in Lync Server is a set of Lync Server computers that are well connected by
a high-speed, low-latency network, such as a single local area network (LAN) or
two LANs connected by a high-speed fiber optic network.
Types of Site:
There are two types
of sites; Central and Branch.
A central site contains
at least one pool (Standard or Enterprise). A branch site is associated with exactly
one central site, and the users at the branch site get most of their Lync Server
functionality from the servers at the associated central site.
Each branch site contains
at least a public switched telephone network (PSTN) connection and can also include
a Mediation Server. Or, a branch site could run a Survivable Branch Appliance (SBA).
SBA is a new device
introduced in Lync Server 2010 that combines a PSTN gateway with a Lync Server Registrar
and Mediation Server.
AV Conferencing Server
Now you can have a
dedicated AV pool for scalability which is the recommended deployment for better
audio-video experience.
Director
It’s a unique server
role in Microsoft Lync Server 2010. You won’t have option to home users on a Lync
Server Director.
The Director does not
require a separate back-end database; instead, it uses a local version of the SQL
Server Express Edition database software, which is installed automatically when
you deploy a Director.
Mediation Server
Now, Mediation server
can be collocated on the front end server. Collocation is recommended if you are
not using SIP trunking or Direct SIP.
