Operating System requirement:

Microsoft Lync Server 2010 supports the 64-bit editions of the following operating systems:

  • The Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard operating system
  • The Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise operating system
  • The Windows Server 2008 Standard operating system with Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • The Windows Server 2008 Enterprise operating system with SP2

Hardware requirement for Archiving Server

 64-bit 4-way processor, dual-core, 2.0 GHz or higher

Memory16 GB recommended

DiskLocal storage with at least 72 GB free disk space on a 10,000 RPM disk drive

Network2 network adapters, each 1 Gbps

Hardware Recommendations for Back-End Servers and Other Database Servers

Hardware ComponentMinimum Requirement

CPU64-bit dual processor, quad-core, 2.0 GHz or higher
 64-bit 4-way processor, dual-core, 2.0 GHz or higher

Memory32 GB recommended for back-end server (with or without collocated Archiving and Monitoring databases), 16 GB recommended for Archiving and Monitoring database (not collocated with the back-end server)

DiskLocal storage with at least 72 GB free disk space on a 10,000 RPM disk drive

Network2 network adapters, each 1 Gbps

Additional software requirement:

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 with SP1.

Download the Microsoft .NET 3.5 Service Pack 1 (Full Package) at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=197398.

After installing the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 package, you should immediately install the following updates:

·         Microsoft Knowledge article 959209, "An update for the .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 is available," at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=197396, which addresses a set of known application compatibility issues.

·         Microsoft Knowledge article 967190, "Update for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (KB967190)," at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=197397, which addresses a file association issue for XPS document.

The Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 redistributable.

Download the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x64) at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=197399

Windows PowerShell version 2.0.

Windows Media Format Runtime.

To install the Windows Media Format Runtime on servers running Windows Server 2008 R2, use the following command:

%systemroot%\system32\dism.exe /online /add-package /packagepath:%windir%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Media-Format-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.7600.16385.mum /ignorecheck

To install the Windows Media Format Runtime on servers running Windows Server 2008, use the following command:

%systemroot%\system32\pkgmgr.exe /quiet /ip /m:%windir%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Media-Format-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.6001.18000.mum

Windows Installer version 4.5

Message queuing

Message Queuing, with Active Directory Integration enabled, on the server running Archiving Server and on each Front End Server and Standard Edition server that hosts users who will have IM archived. Following roles should have the MSMQ enabled.

  • Front End Server
  • Mediation Server
  • Archiving Server
  • Monitoring Server
  • A/V Conferencing Server

SQL Server requirement

Archiving Server requires the Microsoft SQL Server database software to store the archive data. You must install Microsoft SQL Server on the computer that will host the Archiving Server database. This can be the same computer that runs Archiving Server, the computer that runs Monitoring Server, the database for the Monitoring Server, or a dedicated database server for archiving. You can also use the same SQL instance that you use for the back-end database of a Front End pool. For best performance, you should deploy the Archiving database on a computer that is separate from the Central Management store.

File storage:

Microsoft Lync Server 2010 communications software supports file shares on either direct attached storage (DAS) or a storage area network (SAN), including Distributed File System (DFS), as well as redundant array of independent disks (RAID).

Installation steps:

Open the Topology Builder (TB) and define the Archiving Server role, and publish it as follows..

Run the setup wizard from the Microsoft Lync Archiving Server.

Setup\amd64\Setup.exe

On the first page of the Deployment Wizard, specify the installation location (by default, C:\Program Files\Microsoft Lync Server 2010).

On the License Agreement page, review the license agreement, select the I accept the terms in the license agreement check box to proceed, and then click OK.

On the Welcome page, click Install or Update Lync Server System.

In Step 1: Install Local Configuration Store, click Run.

In this process, deployment Wizard reads the configuration information from the Central Management database, which you defined using Topology Builder, and writes the XML configuration file to the local machine.

On the Configure Local Replica of Central Management Store page, click Retrieve directly from the Central Management Store (Requires read access to the Central Management Store), and then click Next.

You may get the following error.

“Automatic collection of configuration data failed.”

Ensure followings to get rid off this problem.

·         SQL server dynamic port is not blocked on the firewall,

·         You have access of the configuration store from the server.

In Step 2: Setup or Remove Lync Server Components, click Run.

Deployment Wizard installs the Lync Server components specified in the XML configuration file stored on the local machine.

Click Next.

Click Finish.

Skip Step 3: Request, Install or Assign Certificates, because there are no certificate requirements for the deploying Archiving Server.

In Step 4: Start Services, click Run.

Click Next.

Click Finish.
