Is Mediation Server Compulsory to have for Voice Integration?

We need to know the functionality of a mediation server before we answer this...The main function of the Mediation Server is to translate media: G.711 on the gateway side and RT Audio on the Communications Server side.
If we do have advanced media gateway then we don't need a mediation server.
