VOIP GATEWAY
VOIP gateway connects two
incompatible types of telephony systems. It understands
and provides the protocol which could be understand by
both telephony system, hence enabling them to talk to
each other.
Technically speaking VOIP gateway works as a protocol
translation tool between circuit switching protocols
into packet switching protocols.
Exchange UM or OCS Mediation server needs a VOIP gateway
to convert circuit switched protocols to packet switched
protocols so that the Exchange UM or OCS Mediation
server can connect to traditional analog or digital PBX.
Exchange Unified Messaging natively supports only
packetswitched voice (RTP) and fax (T.38) over IP
protocols. Customers with traditional, analog or digital
PBXs must have a VoIP Gateway to do the needed protocol
translation for Exchange Unified Messaging.
Exchange Unified Messaging server receives the voice
data packets which have been transported as VoIP to the
Unified Messaging server. This voice data is then
packaged into a voice message and delivered to the
Exchange Mailbox server. The voice message appears in
the recipient’s Exchange mailbox as a voice message.
